Our Expansion and Daycare are Officially Open!

Our University Highlands Elementary community was joined today by special guests to mark our new expansion. The addition brings eight new classrooms and space for childcare within our school. The classrooms create room for 195 students in our growing community on Burnaby Mountain.

Gary Wong, Board Chair, Burnaby Board of Education:

Word has gotten out about this thriving, close-knit community and how great it is to be on Burnaby Mountain. So much so that our school needed to grow… Growth comes with other needs, including childcare.”

77 children now have before and after school care right in University Highlands. The expansion project further enabled the Simon Fraser University Childcare Society to create 27 additional childcare spaces.

Katrina Chen, Minister of State for Childcare:

Partnerships like this one are giving parents more options for high-quality learning
environments for their kids, as well as the convenience that comes with having childcare on school grounds.”

Sarah Borsa, University Highlands parent and Chair of the Parent Advisory Council:

We are thrilled with the expansion of the school. We want to continue to build this community and we really feel very fortunate to have childcare on site.”

The project is a partnership between the Government of BC, SFU Childcare Society, SFU Community Trust, and the Burnaby School District.
